Chemical blackening, also known simply as blackening, is a surface treatment used to give steel and stainless steel a uniform, deep-black appearance. The layer is scratch-resistant and reduces light reflection. Chemical blackening does not affect the dimensions of the product. It is suitable for machine parts, assembly components, automotive and bicycle parts, among other applications. Chemical blackening is also often used for decorative purposes. Unlike other types of surface treatment, blackening offers little to no corrosion resistance.
